Referee Decision by an Elbow

Referee Decision by an Elbow

What will you do when you act as referee in a game and you see an deliberate elbow given by a player to another player.
Even when it is an reaction to another player that did something to him during the game.

The rules say about that:
Physically attacking or deliberate hurting an opponent or striking or attempted to strike an opponent with any part off the body or equipment. This includes any action taken in retaliation.

Like this movie:

At first I was soft and give him 5 minutes. Because it was no competition game ,
only a friendly tournament with games off 15 minutes.
But like you can see he gives the elbow deliberate in attempt to hurt the opponent.
In a unsportsmanlike move.

I now the rules say in “time penalty’s
Attacking/hurting is total dismissal.

But what had you given to him.
I now there are referees that gives only a free puck for that.
So what will you do/give to that player.

According to the CMAS rules that foul is an easy match dismissal (as you said, attacking/hurting is match dismissal, regardless of whether they are retaliating or not.)
Even though it is a friendly tournament, I think I would have still given a match dismissal as that move could have injured the other player and it makes the tournament a lot less friendly.

atapene will become famous soon enough
that is an utter disgrace, i would give that guy the game and talk with the chief ref about having him ejected from the comp. the fact that they are friendly games makes it even worse.

I agree with you. Maybe nice to now. At the time he did get those penalty there were only 4,50 minuts play time left. So he did not return in the match. So by giving him 5 minuts it was a match dismissal.

Indeed. But it cost that team the game.
SO by doing that he did not get the upperhand.
But his team lost the game by doing that.

Thats one thing to remember when giving an elbow.
It can cost more then only playing time. It can cost the game.
Besides that its really sad and a disgrace for the sport when somebody used that sort off play.

hit in the right spot that was a tooth gone, really bad sportsmanship, not only would i throw him out, i´d give him a good bollocking after the game.
just dont know why these people play sport in the first place.
elbows happen accidently but this was bladently aggressive

Spot on Steve. No way this could have been interpretted as an accident.

Yeah, that's right, when a player does something that is so obviously deliberate he should pay for it.

Sven, I know you said that you gave him 5 minutes which ultimately meant he couldn't play the rest of the game because there was less than 5 minutes left, I think issuing a game dismissal is still a more severe penalty and sets an example/precedence. He could feel that he could get away with it again for another 5 minutes down the track. It feels a lot worse to get given a game dismissal than a time penalty (not that I would know personally!). And it also allows greater discussion post game, as Liam said, and the chief ref should have had words.
