| benson and i are poles apart on the most effective way to take a free puck. naturally i am correct and benson can only be best described as both reckless and insane. i submit that my method carries no risk whatsoever to the attackers and should always, if excuted simply and correctly, without fancy additions or subtractions, by the attackers, result in a goal being scored. scored; not awarded - cleanly scored and without any scope for referees to disallow the goal. this is, sadly, a matter of ongoing debate between us.

| nat's right, it's just the same as general play. and of course yes, the defender lines up his/her body whichever way he/she can to get advantage from it... attacker would have to be an idiot to swim the puck under the defenders legs for instance just like in general play, or flicking the puck into the defender... the goal after all is most likely to utilize your extra player and get the puck to them. jordan, if one route to the bin is blocked, the thing is 3m wide... the attackers have to find another route.

| i know i get my body in the way, especially in general play - if i know there's a player on the other side of me and the guy with the puck wants to flick it to him i'll make it as hard as possible |

| i know that its just the same in general play... i was just trying to make the question a little more specific so people would not be able to talk about too many different situations. also the discussion among the many players i have heard lately mainly involved the penalty shot so i figured i might as well include it in my question. and also im not too sure about that swim it straight in technique... it sounds great and all, but what if right off the touch of the puck the defender swims out at you. then you are just making it easier for them to get the puck because all they have to do is make sure your fancy little move doesn't get by them or that a shot doesn't happen either. what would your next move be if the defender immideatly jumps off the wall?? |
| ||||
| thats a nice thing to say... but it might be a little harder to do. if i had to fight you a little bit away from the goal or knock down the shot i would rather take the fight from a defenders position you have better odds. although knocking down shots is getting easier |

| ...yeah that theory doesn't ALWAYS work ay benny... sometimes good to have a little insurance on hand ![]() nothing's fool-proof, especially in a pressure situation like a penalty. but in the same way, if you commit fully to something you can mostly make it work... how sensible it is just determines how hard you have to work.

All of the instances that I have seen of penalty shots being stopped are related to the attackers ballsing it up by hesitating/being indecisive. Often it does not matter what you do, as long as you do it well - you will score. Jordan, in your first example... you flicked it into the defenders legs. OK... where was your other attacker? As soon as the puck hits his legs the other player should be there to put it in. Regarding flicking the puck into a static defender... as a ref I would say that if the player is able to move his legs out of the way and does not then it is a foul and the unbeliever should be punished.

| So if a player tries to move his leg out of the way and still hits the puck, what happens? By the rules it can be interpretted as playing the puck with something other than your stick. Foul. As a defender you can't reward the attackers because you are trying to do the right thing and fail. Best to stay where you are and if the attacker shoots a stupid shot then the attacker made the mistake. Ever with that you still should score the goal.
