A Session with a Difference

More Will than Skill! - that's me, for sure.

Thought I might post a swim session that we did last year in preparation for the Worlds. It is structured like a game including 2x5min overtime - and how appropriate that turned out to be! Maybe I need to add another set at the end "Do as many 50m breathholds you can" to simulate Sudden Death?! (Note: this is more of an endurance session than a sprint session)

10-15min WARM-UP
1 x 300m mixed
10 x 25m ½ hard ½ easy (20)
5 x 25m uw, 1 breath half way (40)
5 x 25m uw (40)

15min HARD (1st HALF)
3 x 5 x 50m (all on the 60):
1 x 50m: 25m strike (touch bottom at 12.5m) sprint to 25m uw, 25m freestyle sprint to wall.
1 x 50m bouncing. [or “bumps” for the kiwis]
1 x 50m: 25m strike (touch bottom at 12.5m) sprint to 25m uw, 25m freestyle sprint to wall.
1 x 50m bouncing.
1 x 50m: 25m with full curl uw, 25m freestyle surface to wall.

15min HARD (2nd HALF)
3 x 5 x 50m (all on the 60):
1 x 50m: 25m strike (touch bottom at 12.5m) sprint to 25m uw, 25m freestyle sprint to wall.
1 x 50m ¼ top ¼ bottom.
1 x 50m: 25m strike (touch bottom at 12.5m) sprint to 25m uw, 25m freestyle sprint to wall.
1 x 50m ¼ top ¼ bottom.
1 x 50m: 25m with full curl uw, 25m freestyle surface to wall.

5 min HARD (OVERTIME 1st HALF)
5 x 50m: strike (touch bottom at 12.5m) sprint to 25m uw, freestyle sprint to wall (50)

5min HARD (OVERTIME 2nd HALF)
Alternate (5 laps continuous – time yourself and aim to improve)
1 x 50m uw, 1 breath at 12.5m, 25m and 37.5m [aim is 1 breath, take 2 if must]
1 x 50m freestyle

COOL DOWN
Whatever.

and no, you can't sub!

Training? Whats that?! I take ages to lose fitness, still playing as well as i was at nationals with minimal training. I find I perform better when the opponents are better, fitness doesnt seem to ever be a worry for me.

Natural youth and fitness will only take you so far! At such a young age burn out is a real factor to take into consideration so if you think minimal training is all you need to get the best out of your self than that is cool!

But to be a WORLD CHAMPION in eleit level, learn to love training, it will love you back!

tan you are such a smartass but at least the second part i agree with...

yeah, our kiwi recipe is no smiling, no fun, no sex, no donating blood and no eating chocolate for the whole squad for 6 months prior to the comp. and if you believe some people we also all move to the same city to live together 6 months out too, and get funded by our government to train fulltime. ha de haa haaa... oh, i wish.

since i've been playing worlds most countries have been trying to copy the aussies as their recipe for being champions, hoping they can replicate the australian gamestyle and success.

so you're certainly asking in the right forum zoe

hey tommy,

yeah i remember being 17 it was wicked.

you keep on not training bro, that's the ticket.

and tell all your friends... you can compare not-training techniques with the kiwi lads at shc, i know a few of them who follow your philosophy i think, haha.

Here's a theory: It's good for a player to become unfit so that they learn how to play SMARTER, then when they become fit again, they'll have both brains and brawn and really kick ass!

Or this one: You should have a big meal before training so that your body has to work harder to both digest and swim - sorta like high altitude training! (this theory came from a famous australian forward...no names mentioned).
