tips on passing

heres a few tips on passing, supergood for beginners though it will take a bit of practice to get the benefit into your pass.

please see attached pic....

a good way to break down a static, stationary pass is to think of it like a punch. a punch in boxing or karate uses force from the legs which travels through pivots in the hips and shoulders before it reaches the arms... a pass can work exactly the same way.

firstly, have a look at the pic and notice how at the start of the pass the playing arm is back and the knee on that side is up, and how the playing arm is forward and the knee back at the end of the pass. all 4 limbs do a bit of a lizard action through the pass, keeping the body in balance.

secondly, notice how at the start of the pass the angle of the hips and shoulders is the same.... as you run through the slides you can see first the legs kick, then the hips rotate, then the shoulders rotate and finally the arms move into their lizard type action. at the end of the pass the angle of the shoulders and hips is again the same but this time angled the other way, after the body has rotated through the pass. and easy way to ensure this is to make sure you begin the pass with your playing shoulder high and end it with your shoulder low... if you begin with your shoulder low your body will still attempt to rotate and you will finish the pass lying entirely on your side as you often see kids do, or even with your legs curled up underneath you.

timing these aspects correctly will allow a player to put maximum amount of force into the puck.... it takes a lot of practice and its hard for beginners to get used to starting with their knee "up" behind the puck like a lizard as it feels weird initially but stick at it and your body will get the hang of it pretty quickly... think of it as taking a first step on a ladder and then stepping up onto the ladder as you pass, and getting the force of your kick through your body and into the puck.

EDIT

PS, in the slides there is a big followthrough but this is not necessary to get a decent pass off

But the follow through is generally a good indication of the shot getting done right. Or perhaps I should say it this way, the lack of follow through shows a lack of proper shot technique/timing. Much like an Olympic Diver making little splash usually means the rest of the dive was good. When they splash big it is because of technique flaws such as lack of height, over-rotation, legs separating or crossing, etc. And it could be caused by something as little as looking down just a bit at the take-off. You can still have a great entry with flaws in other parts of the dive so it is not a 100% indicator. Same with your shot. There are people who can muscle a shot without the follow through and it is still decent, but in general the follow through is big because the timing and technique were all right.

The cool thing is that when you get the timing and teechnique just right, the shot feels almost effortless.

following the picture tells a thousand words thing, i've tried to make the confusing ramble at the top of this thread more clear.

as cheekily pointed out, obviously practice is crucial (but it doesn't hurt to be practicing the right things)

That is a good explanation frame by frame for the passing. By the way i have been doing a research for my master's thesis which is related to uwh players' underwater swimming velocity and dominant leg and trunk muscles it' ll be finished in this september. Do u know any scientific research about uwh ? i did a literature research but there are so finite research about it. I think that we should do researches to increase the knowledge about uwh.

best regards.
