| Beware nutritionists giving you advice about what to eat. Much of their advice is not scientifically based, and even when it supposedly is based on 'science' it's never been tested to see whether it actually improves your performance. I'm not asying for certain that they are wrong about any advice they give you. I'm just saying that most of the time they don't really know. |

The milk thing Otto brings up is pretty good. Chocolate milk is better. Basically milk is easily digestible and gives you some good stuff. We used to have a player who drank a quart before every practice. For an old guy he had a lot of energy.

| i gotta agree with Nat on this. too often the biggest bit of 'advice' i hear from nutritionists is 'eat a balanced/healthy diet'. well, duh. my mother qualifies as a nutritionist based on this revelation. i remember being told by a nutritionist way back when i was much younger NOT to consume diary products prior to swimming/games cos they were tough to digest and increased phlegm in the airways - which would make for potentially messy and difficult breathing. gobbing phlegm out your snorkel was not considered a good look even before we had cameras at worlds. go to 5 different nutritionists, get 5 different answers i think. perhaps we all need to careful in selection of the nutritionists we talk to. Dr Nat, what qualifications should we be asking these folks to produce in order to prove their bona fides?

| The podcast is going up today. To answer the above points, listen to the podcast. Before you get carried away with the whole mis information thing - think about it carefully. AMC - eat a balanced diet 'duh' - bet you don't, but you know you should. Thats not mis information thats common sense. It's ill discipline not to execute what you know to be true. You're a coach, you know what i mean. Why? Because it's hard to do, requires descpline and dedication. If the only thing that anyone learns from this series of podcasts is to eat a good, clean, balanced diet. Then that's great. You'll all be healthier and happier people. *as noted in the podcast and by me in the past - if you have an illness, injury or haelth concern. Don't ask a trainer (me)- seek medical attetion (or ask Nat). They are way different things and mustn't be confused. Hope you all enjoy (it's a long interview) and only the first of what will be a series as i help Liam put on some serious muscle mass for Durban(plus win his bet with Benson) I'm also going to help Alex achieve her goals. There's one more spot up for grabs - Benson i have time for you if you wanto beat Liam too?

| ps; the proof of this pudding will be served up on the public table for consumption. Liam has his base lines documented. And we'll easily be able to measure weight and strength gains. Performance and it's improvement is not easily measured however. But that's not what we're doing here. The assignment is to add 'x' amount of lean muscle mass to an athlete. Will it improve his performance? I don't know, that can only be answered by his coach. Neither is tournament nutrition part of the program. How you would eat for that i can speculate on. But i'd be guessing mostly. So - just to be very clear. My gig and speciality is adding strength and muscle through weight training. Thats it folks. Don't anyone ask me about drinking milk before swimming. I just don't know.

| Dear Dr Carl ![]() Thanks for the talk last night - I've just got back from the supermarket with some goodies to last me the next couple of days. I've also done some reading research - "The Blood Type Diet Cookbook" (by Karen Vago). Yes, this will take a massive amount of dedication and determination, but I'm prepared to give it a go for one month, just to see how I cope! I've got my measurements somewhere from my last world's prep so I think it's fair to say that will be my goal. Okay, I'm off to have my lamb tagine... mmmm yum ![]()

| Jesus christ, I've missed the last week due to mooching around scotland. Much has been happening I see. Well, I can't be bothered reading everything, so someone fill me in... I'm currently on 111kg. God knows what my fat percentage is, but I'm betting it's over 20%... Maybe I should do before/after shots.
