Hey - has anybody mastered the "rolley flick" - getting the puck to roll (rather than lift)? It is often very effective (travels much further than a normal flick) when it is done by accident - or is that because it was accidental and the opposition aren't prepared for the stuffed flick?

Duck is an unknown quantity at this point
If you watch Jake's video on youtube you can see he has that in there. And it was on purpose. When he showed up out here, Greg Appling watched him do it once or twice and came up and said, something to the effect, "yeah, like you meant to do that." Jake quickly said "yeah and I'll do it again", followed by Greg laughing, Jake going down and doing it again, and then the rest of us laughing. Problem with it is aim. It is difficult to control left or right lean and it will change on the run, or rather, on the roll.

I had a look at the clip and you are right! You say there's a problem with the aim - but when you do them by accident (although you never admit it) the direction is always right so it should be achievable just nobody has mastered it yet?

atapene will become famous soon enough
hopefully that boy will come home and trial for the nz teams one day...

i've never managed to do a rolley flick on purpose, or tried...

i'm sure gonna try now though! the thought of jake teaching dozens of americans to do puck skills i can't do makes me want to find a cliff.

does he have any tips for it or will i have to ask jakes little brother?

I didn't actually ask Jake about how he did it, but i've been working a little for quite a while on just getting the puck up on the edge, and watching right before one of our games yesterday, his arm motion was a bit different than I would have tried. Maybe I'll ask if I can get back down there for practice before his semester is done.

Not the right way of thinking about it. For one just 'cause he's showing it to some does not mean we're learning it
two, it'll just be another in the growing line of Kiwi legends. for years to come, a rolling puck flick will simply be known as "Hocking" it. Just like all of europe calls the sweeping arm movement with the puck a "Benson".

Iff you look good and try it it works.(the rolling flick)
We have try'd it with the compleet team. And it works.
But there is a differents in how and how easy in what model stick you use.
With a dorsal or fishsticks it is very easy to do.

Please try it yourself.
Maybe in some futhure time i will make a photo session about it so you can see it step for step.
It is a technick.
(we are doing that with every technick we now at this time.)

Sven,
great to hear you are taking fotage of skills - is there any way of getting copies? We are always looking for new material to include in our training manuals or to make available to beginners.
