Yep - its Jake and Jesse Hocking in their pool at home. I talked to Jesse about it last night. Apparently they made it about 2 years ago.

Not sure which thread to post this to, but notice they are using dorsal sticks.

Jake is taking a semester at school out here in San Jose, I only made it down last week since he's been out here, but he's really making people think about those dorsal sticks, mostly he said its what he got used to when he was a junior, but he's a real big proponent of them. I'm planning on trying it out next weekend, we'll see, i've never liked a plastic stick yet.

Wish I could have started playing hockey at that age.

big proponent, are you serious? jakes mum and dad make the things, they developed the mould etc. of course he's a proponent of them. they pretty much designed the things for him, jesse and elle to use.

you'll also notice though, if you look at his sticks you'll probably find he's manually altered them from the basic dorsal shape that spits out of the mould, in particular to make them thinner as their initial shape has quite a fat thickness which can make them feel a little clumpy.

if they were a slightly longer shape and didn't have such fat handles i'd probably use them sometimes when i couldnt be bothered painting sticks... but they're pretty stubby, lots of adult players here like their sticks to be longer.

to flick with them you have to use quite a pronounced rotating wrist motion, as you can see in that clip, to really get under the puck, and it results in a generally high flick but not quite so much distance.

...probably pays to bear in mind that jake was a good player with a pretty high skill level before they started making dorsals too.

 HAAA!!!
That is hilarious, now I know how he was able to "arrange a special price with the sellers back home" to sell a bunch of them here.

Yeah he was actually talking about reshaping and filing them down as a benifit of the material, as well as roughing up the playing area to better grip the puck. I've seen this done in a variety of different ways with all kinds of plastic and urethane sticks, maybe not to the extent he did with his but same concept.

I have found that in general shorter sticks, or sticks with a bit less mass are good for getting a nice high flick, but lack some of the distance. I'll see this weekend about the dorsal stick, i've kinda started collecting various stick designs even if I don't like them, so I'll probably end up with a pair.

I've never heard of the Hockings, but that is one awesome video! It really brings out the fun in hockey. Plus, love the way it has been put together and the soundtrack. If ever there was something that we should show beginners to get them interested then there it is.

It really inspires and now I just want to jump in the pool and start having some fun, I guess it's never too late to refine my puck control. If you haven't watched the vid & have 4 minutes to spare do!

Meg
