What dry-side tests can you do? I think I read somewhere that the New Zealand academy record how many sit-ups and push-ups you can do in 2 minutes, is this really useful in determining your in-game fitness? Do many teams advise specific dry-side training to improve performance underwater?

amc32 is an unknown quantity at this point
sounds like you fullahs are [mostly] using the OLD beep test
current edition is still boring, but it's finished about 5 minutes quicker

Carl - how do i load a copy of the new and improved [sort of] beep test for everyone to use?
it's an excel file so cutting and pasting might be a bit crummy with this mailer thingy.

level length start recovery clock time who got what
1 1 0:00 00:00.0 0
2 0:30 00:30.0 30
3 1:00 00:30.0 0
4 1:30 00:30.0 30
2 5 1:58 00:28.0 58
6 2:26 00:28.0 26
7 2:54 00:28.0 54
3 8 3:20 00:26.0 20

yeah like that - a little skew-wiff and not easy to copy from here.

folks using the old version will spot that intervals cut down quicker and fewer lengths done at slow intervals.

seldom, if ever, does anyone get cut from the NZ team because their beep test score is crap. BUT a real crappy beep test is sometimes an indication that a player has other issues to sort out before he can fully commit to what the team is doing.

the nz academy you're referring to lewis is an U18 academy. just thought i'd point that out.

I guess when looking at these fitness tests and you want to get technical about it you should first be asking "What is fitness?"

* Agility
* Balance
* Body composition
* Cardiovascular endurance
* Coordination
* Flexibility and joint range of motion
* Muscular strength & endurance
* Speed

Does anyone have a single test that covers all of the above? How many people cover flexibilty as a measure of fitness and record this? Just throwing it out there that there's a lot more to measuring fitness than just how fast or far you can swim in a given time.

Tommy in the past (Australia womens coach) has measured Felxability, cm over toe touching etc, and also lots of plyametrics measurements.
I think measuring heart rate with moniter is a fantastic to get some testing done. Recovery of heart rate is a great thing to test and measure.
Cheers
Belle

It was lucky then that Tommy didn't do the flexibility tests last year! Yikes. I did that test just last week and recorded a not-so-impressive what Liam has down his pants (and that was my best out of 3 result!). Something to include in my training plans this year....(stretching, that is).

amc,

you need to link to the file so others can download it.
Tats if it exsists on the web somewhere?

If not go here http://www.yousendit.com/
and make yourself a free account
email the file to yourself - it'll send you a link in the email (the file exsists on their server)
paste the link here
it'll be good for 1 week only

Hope that helps
