Sorry, I tried to be clear but ended up rambling so I tried to condense what I was saying and I guess just made the whole message a mess
basically it seems in hockey the normal way a pass is recieved is to wait for it to hit the bottom and then try and control it and hopefully move to space before being tackled. Even if you have made a decision about what you are going to do with the puck before it gets there and then attempt to move the puck in a direction imediatly after it hits bottom you are still behind the action of the play and both you and the defender are reacting to the motion of the puck, rather than controlling the puck and making the defender react to you. It looks to me the way 6-7 yeear olds play soccer. Or in waterpolo it may be akin to letting the ball land in the water infront of you rather than catching it in the air. Now really this only applies to a pass that is made TO you and not to open space, and a pass that is up off the bottom not a slider, but the ability to pluck the puck from mid water near your shoulder and put it on the bottom moving in the direction you are going to be going is essential.

This is a comment from watching video of our game with GB in Sheffield. What the real problem is what I did with the puck after I plucked from shoulder height. I slapped it down in front of me, then fumbled a bit and the defender was on top of me. I feel had I let the puck finish its path and hit bottom, then try and control it, I would have been in about the same spot as the defender would have been closing on the puck while I just waited for it to finish its travel (I may have made a better decision on where I went afterward but that is aside the point) Had I in mid-water moved the puck from my right shoulder to my left side rather than right in front of me, and like bentfishboy said be at top speed going in that direction, good chance I would have moved up to their 5 meter line from ½ court. I can’t seem to make a clip of the video in the format its in on my computer… hmmm oh well its not a very flattering sequence, but my point is this should be a regular way of receiving a pass and Benson’s drill is something I am a little disappointed I didn’t think about doing on my own.
