is it so

So Carol Rose you are saying that the commission does not organise the world Champs, well in that case WTD is telling tall stories as he says that the commission controls it all, this would seem right judging by the failure of Bari.

So which is it you do or you don't influence it?

Sitting on the fence

NZ's official position from its exec is that it is sitting on the fence.

NZ will be sending teams to Durban BUT NZ also likes the idea of the CMAS games. Sure there are a few issues with the CMAS games, (only 8 teams, no juniors or masters, etc, etc) but the concept of all u/w sports getting together for a massive olympic type competition is awesome. CMAS games will be great for the promotion of our sport and for developing the sport worldwide.

As far as I know NZ have not been involved in any decisions to split from CMAS or in the setup of WAA.

I don't have a solution but I don't think splitting our sport in two is the right way to go.

controlling and organising are different things. i cannot see how WTD has lead you astray.

sub-standard organisation does not always equate with failure either. i have read more positive comments about Bari than negative.
the concept is appealing, but the timing and organisation need to be improved is the jist of the comments.

are VERY different things

exactly. the world tournament director previews - on site - the venue and associated necessities about 1 year in advance - suggesting and pointing out needs. Then s/he keeps in constant communication (email, phone, etc) with organizing host committee chair/convenor/whatever and heads of subcommittees as needed. S/he is the control but not an organizer.

Adding to the complications are the variety of venues - outdoor pool in San Jose; Ponds Forge; pool in Tas; QUII in Christchurch; Talisman Center in Canada - different playing configurations, different bottoms, depth of playing areas, weird pool stuff (ie walls in Sheffield), what venue will allow and so forth.

I cannot fathom how anyone could imagine a group of 6 persons( on 3 continents, 6 countries speaking 3 languages) could organize a WC - I know from 1998, it all must be on site - US committee in San Jose (me included) met monthly for a year; then weekly last month; and daily week before teams arrived. And that was 1998 - a far cry from the superior effort by BOA which I believe we all agree was tremendous.

atapene will become famous soon enough
you know, all i want to hear from the WAA and the commission etc is positive stuff about durban.

durban durban durban.

i may be alone but personally i dont want to hear any more negative stuff about cmas comps. at this stage it's just pointless mudslinging, we all know they intend to go on organising hockey comps at this stage.

anything that cmas sorts out, they sort out, and any countries that are chancing their luck going to cmas comps will obviously make their decision to attend based on what they see and good luck to them, we'll see how it all goes, no-one gains anything from reading more bagging of cmas, we've heard it all before.

can this thread be about the 2009 games and anything people find out about it, from countries that actually plan to go etc?

there are other threads for posts about the durban games where people are really keen to hear about the durban event from the people involved in organising it.

Hmm... I think that the lack of iether Juniors or Masters (I think juniors) is a good thing. The tournament is getting a little too big for it's own good. In the end the players at Worlds are (except for the French that I am aware of) paying their own way. And of course are giving up a large portion of their holidays to come to play. Sheffield was well organised and I enjoyed it a lot, but playing only three games in the last 6 days was ridiculous.

Re: CMAS... can anyone point me towards a factual account of what the problems are with CMAS? All I have really seen here are emotionally charged responses. I can understand that if you have been struggling with them it would be hard to remain objective, but I can't really form an opinion since I see a lot of 'did not'/'did to/ sort of arguments here.
Just the facts would be very helpful.
