Stick Bevels

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to experiment with different combinations of bevel angles on my stick over the next few months and thought I'd start by soliciting some input from others.

Currently, I use a wooden stick made of poplar (or maple if playing on a rough bottom). I use a bevel angle of 12 degrees on both the front and back surfaces. The back bevel extends rearward past the contact point where my thumb rests on the stick (so my thumb is pushing against a beveled surface rather than a vertical one - which affects the stick's "neutral" orientation).

My main motivation for this experiment is to improve shot length, but preferably without increasing the overall length of my stick. I work on my shot technique regularly and, while my shot is quite consistent, I don't seem to be able to get the really long flicks that others can get using sticks of similar length.

If you have any information regarding the relationship between bevels and shot length (or related, similar relationships), please feel free to share, discuss, etc. on this thread.

Once I start to get data from my experiments, I'll post here again with anything useful I discover.

Pool floors/bottoms

Hi everyone, we need some advice about pool floors/bottoms, our home town pool (Copacabana) was renovated, we have now got a beautiful swimming pool but the bottom is not suitable for UWH, it is a PVC membrane so the contractors do not want to supply warranty if we play UWH. We have got some ideas from the courts used in San Jose and Calgary worlds. Is there any more options????? Maybe around Europe, has anyone seen something different?????
I remember in 2008 at PCC´s in San Jose they were trying a different kind of floor, I am not sure if it worked out....anyway, I would really appreciate it if we can get some advice, Pics, Links etc. about it.
Thanks.

SIMMS puck ILEGAL

While doing research on other pucks, among most of available types, I also destroyed a new Simms puck. To my amazement, I found out its illegal. The thickness of protection arround the core, by rules has to be minimum of 2mm. On the side "taper" of a top-bottom disk, the protection falls down below 2 mm. The general thickness of the taper is only 1,9mm and on extreme end is only 1,8.

Measurements are correct, and verified several times. Puck was never used before its dissection.

The top plates on Simms have only 2.2 mm thickness, and while that would suffice for many games, if the plate was made from teflon or any other hard plastics (usually found in some other pucks), the PE used in Simms puck is soft and easily damaged, and I question the correct thickness even for the plates itself, after some use...

It looks to me like designers pushed the tolerances in order to both save on materials, and gain on stabillity of the puck. While Simms equals the "stable" pucks, its by no means the most stable one, amongst already available. Also, designers looks like to have more worries how to put it together, than the actual performances of the puck itself.

But in my view, the Simms is the only puck of all, made from what I enviously call "perversive" design, using all the latest gadgets in toolings, and materials to suit the ease of production, like CNC autocad all the way... Comparing Simms puck to say Italian puck, its like comparing horse driven plow, to the Apollo LEM spacecraft for moon landings. Even the Simms lead core, is made from CNC crafted, industrial supplied lead profiles, that serves the further processes of the puck production in the final toolings. But if this one was inside Apollo 11, Armstrong would crash it on the moon in '69.... or on Sheffield 2006 ;)

For that fact alone, I'm even more disappointed, to have found out this debacle of the auto-cad designers, designing its toolings.

Worlds was played with Simms puck (by current WAA leaders approval), CMAS has taken it as an "official puck"... and no one ever has taken the time, in so many years, to verify it. Until I decided to produce my own puck, and found that out by simple, old school analysis... bad me, huh?

Hi All,

After discovering about ten years ago that I play equally badly with both hands, and not just as a right-hander, I have been playing UWH with two gloves and double-ended sticks.

My first ambidextrous sticks were made for me in about 2000 by Jim Randall in the UK, my next sets by Les Buchanan of True Blue in Australia, which believe has now been taken over by Matt Mason, with whom I reffed at the Hobart worlds. The sticks that Les made for me were basically double-ended versions of the Slick Flicker Slim, shown below:

These sticks have done me well for many years, but having broken my favourite black at a tournament in November and my last remaining white in training yesterday, I now find myself with a single old black and no whites and my next tournament coming up in two weeks time.

Would anybody out there be able to make me some double-ended sticks, ideally in the next two weeks? I have the carpentry skills of a four year old and unfortunately as I am now based in Switzerland, the only club that we have here is the one that I started at the end of 2008 and none of us are carpenters.

I was talking to Benson Taylor at the 2009 Euroclubs and he was telling me his ideas for a double-ended stick that involved me rotating the stick, not just passing it from hand to hand. Bennie, are you out there? Or Jim, Matt, Liam, Ales or anybody else that fancies an interesting project?

I am certainly not fixed upon having to have a duplicate of what I had before, and am certainly open to any suggestions of new ideas. But I do feel crippled by being able to use only one hand, so would be very keen to get some new ambidextrous sticks as quickly as I can.

Many thanks in advance!

Brass Puck Usage

Hey Hockeyland,

A recent discussion on my facebook page (CanAm Underwater Hockey Gear | Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/CanAmUWHGear)) took place over Full Brass Underwater hockey Pucks. When I started playing uwh in 1990 we played with brass until about 1995 or so. The brass was fast, stable compared to the plastic pucks of that vintage. The brass pucks chipped and cracked the tiles in our pool an we were told not to play with the brass anymore. I remember seeing the damage around the goal areas especially.

It seems that a few people are trying to bring back full brass pucks. I am worried that these pucks will cause harm to the game of Underwater Hockey. I could manufacture a full brass puck but I believe that the brass around the contact radius of the puck should not exist. I know there are some pools that are super bad/rough and that's why I have offered the CanAm Uni2 Puck (http://www.canamsticks.com) with Brass and soon Stainless Steel Sliders. The sliders are not in the contact zone around the outer rim and should minimize any tile breakage and not wear out super fast.

So a couple of questions for other players, countries or organizations across the world:
1. Do you allow full brass pucks?
2. Do you think using them is good for the sport?
3. Anyone been sued or held liable for tile damage or lost a pool due to that issue?

I would love to have a good discussion on this...

So I have been working with Force Fin for a while now and here it is, the first time Force Fin has prototyped Hockey specific fin. While this is the first prototype and there are a couple of refinements that need to be made before its release, it already promises to be a great fin.

Its' acceleration is on par with the best I have used, maneuverability is amazing, its short length allows even quicker turns, and positioning is fantastic.

Image: http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g278/meesier42/ff_hockey1_bpm.jpg

there are still a couple of things we are tuning with the fin to refine it some, and a really quantitative comparative testing is still to come, the initial night of hockey and testing in them went fantastically. As for price and availability, I am not sure yet, so don't ask, but I am confident the it will be less than the Breiers, although not as cheap as the Mares line, but they should last forever (I have 15 y/o Force Fins that I still use regularly). As for a release date, well its still a work in progress, I don't know, hopefully sometime this spring for the first pairs.
