The Guinness Tournament is back

The Guinness Tournament is back
After many years in the wilderness playing tournaments in pools scattered around Dublin we have decided to return to the spiritual home of Irish Underwater Hockey that is “The Guinness Pool” located in the heart of Dublin city. (Across the road from the famous St James’ Gate Brewery and within walking distance of Templebar, Grafton Street & Trinity College) The Guinness Pool is a 25M long 2.5M to 1.2M deep tiled bottom “old school” pool. It’s got a slope yes but its also got good tiles and the slope only makes it interesting.

The Plan
The tournament will be held over the weekend of the 10th-12th October.
On Saturday at about 1pm we will be meeting in Dalkey, take a look at a map and bring your wetsuits. There are a couple of small islands off the coast. We thought that we’d like to show you a part of Dublin other than the inside of a swimming pool. There is a small colony of seals living on the island and the plan is to swim out to them and play around with them. Don’t worry they mostly don’t bite, if you’ve never swam with seals before you’ll love it, this will be a great experience.
We also plan to have a warm up pool session at some point on the Saturday details of which will follow, but it won’t be in the Guinness Pool.
After the excursion to Dalkey we can head back into town and go on the beer. This tournament is as much about seeing Dublin and havin the crack as it is about playing a little hockey.

The Tournament
Will involve 6 scratch teams (What does that mean? Any individual or group can enter and we will assign them a team), Here’s the best part, it doesn’t start until 1.30pm on Sunday (meet at pool 1pm to find your team)so go out have some fun on Friday and Saturday night and sleep in a little on Sunday. The tournament will last between 4 and 5 hours (Finish 7pm latest) and we’ll organise a couple of pints to wind down the weekend. There are loads of early flights out of Dublin on a Monday morning.

So what do you need to do to enter?
  • Let us know that you or a group of you intend to come along.
  • Give us the names of those coming and their playing status (1. Elite Men/Women, 2. Club Experienced, 3.Club Average, 4. Novice / Beginners)
  • Once we let you know that your place/places have been reserved. They will be reserved for 5 days, immediately go ahead and book your flights.
  • Send through the confirmation of your flight from the airline for each of those travelling. This is our confirmation that you are coming along. If we dont receive it your place is not reserved.
  • Make sure you receive our confirmation that your place has been reserved.
The tournament fee per person will be paid on the day. It will be approximately €10 a head (not finalized).
