Here is another example of a term taken from other sports. US and Canada basically call this a poke-check, taken from Ice hockey. The specifics of sven's drawing and explanation don't need to be there it is basically a time when you as a defender of some sort are not in a place to cleanly steal the puck but have a line to the puck. The idea is to "poke" the puck in the direction of your second defender, so he can take possession.
