2008 World Championships
The dates for the 2008 world championships have been confirmed, they are from 21/4/08 through to 4/5/08.
The 2008 World Championships will be held in the Kings Park Pool, Durban South Africa. This is the same venue that was used for the 1996 World Championships. The pool is 2 metres deep all over and we will have exclusive rights to the facility during the championships. We will bring you more information as it comes to hand.
Mouth Guards
It is now compulsory to wear mouth guards at all WAA competitions. All internally fitted mouth guards are approved for use and also WAA approved external mouth guards can be used. Approved external mouth guards can be purchased from the WAA secretary, for price and availability contact Carol Rose
CROSEUSOA@aol.com for information. These mouth guards are the only external type approved by the WAA and are the only external ones that can be used at a WAA event.
Tournament rule change
At the commission meeting held in Sheffield in August it was decided to increase the number of games that can be played in a day from 2 to 3. This was done to make the world championships shorter so there would be cost savings to the participants. It has been agreed by the Association that the world championships in their present format are taking to long to run and with the increasing number of teams this situation would only get worse.
The Association is also looking at running 3 courts simultaneously in an effort to minimise the length of the competition. If 3 games a day were run on any number of days then all the teams competing will have the same amount of games per day at some point throughout the competition. The scheduling for the next world championships in Durban South Africa will be run this way.
Refereeing Director
The Association welcomes Mr. Pizzaz van Schalkwyk to the position of refereeing director. As you may be aware Mr. Murray Brooks who has been the refereeing director for the past 20 years did not seek re election at the Sheffield meeting. We wish Murray all the best for the future and thank him for his contribution over the past 20 years. Mr. van Schalkwyk is an experienced referee with some great ideas for lifting the standard of refereeing at a world level, so we feel sure that there will be some positive changes in the future. All athletes of a national team must have the nationality of the country or submit proof that they have been a resident of that country for the previous 4 years. (the residency must be continuous it can not be accumulative)
Dual nationality, Athletes having dual nationality may choose to compete for one or another country, but this choice obliges them for a period of three years as a minimum.
These rules will be in force for the 2008 world championships and be retrospective from 1st September 2006
